Strider Learns to Drive

Back in April I got my rabies license. Mom picked out a really good vet for me. She is Dr. Winters at Novey Animal Hospital. She loves me. I love her too. She is so nice to me and pets me and gives me treats!

Mom said since I got my license I should learn to drive so we can go on trips.

So, at five and a half months old I started learning to drive. I love driving! It is so neat. I get to stick my head out the window and stare at the ground. Mom said it is important to keep my eyes on the road. So I do.

You can see how well I was driving from the start.

Not bad for a beginner.

I have been practicing for months now. I am bigger so I can stick my head out even farther!

I am working on figuring out how to get the van to turn and chase the goats and cows and donkeys and….squirrel!

IMG_3360 sml

My driving came in handy when we finally went on my fist road trip! Mom had to do most of the driving. It was real long and there were a lot of trees and cars to watch. I fell asleep.

The best part was finally stopping. I met so many people, saw so many things, got to visit gramma and Uncle Eric, and made new friends.

It was a great trip.

Boy am I glad I learned to drive.

Hurricane Irma

Mom and dad seemed pretty upset last Saturday. Mom especially. She was running around the yard all day getting furniture and other stuff out of the yard. She said there was a storm coming and it could all blow away. She called it Hurricane Irma. I thought with all the trouble it was causing it was probably named after the cat that started it.

I did not understand why she was so worried and running around bringing in furniture and plants. She never did it before when it rained.

I remember when I saw my first rain. Mom said we had been in a drought so I had not seen much rain. A drought is what people call it when there isn’t any rain for a long time. I just call it dry and sunny.

I was not so sure I wanted to go out to look at it but mom insisted. As long as she was there it was ok.

It was fascinating. All that water coming down from the sky. It felt nice and cool, but I was not interested in going out and getting wet.

I really liked watching it though, as long as I stayed on the porch and watched.

I was five months old then. Just a baby. Rain doesn’t bother me much now. I like watching it from the screen porch.

This time she said it is different. This storm is really big and has lots of wind with it.

Sunday she spent the day cooking and moving things in the freezer and refrigerator. Someone came and helped put giant boards up on some of the windows. Mom said she felt like a sardine in the house, whatever that is. It did not sound good though.

I helped with the shutters.

IMG_3040 sml

She spent the evening moving things in the house.

Everyone seemed real worried about this storm coming even King Arthur. Mom said he was praying.

IMG_3031 sml

They were very long days and very tiring. I tried to help, following her around both days but I don’t know what she wanted me to do. She hardly noticed me.

Sunday night mom and dad left the tv on and watched a man talk about the weather.

Duh, it was raining.

Late in the night it got real windy and we heard a lot of noise outside. Mom said she was worried about the trees. They are so tall.

A few times we heard real loud cracking sounds. Mom would stand still and wait. Then we would hear a loud BOOM! Then mom would sigh in relief and move again.

Arthur and I knew something was up because they had both of us in the bedroom together with our harnesses on. King Arthur started to freak so mom put him in his carrier.

Around 5:30 in the morning the power went out. The tv was off, lights were off. Mom turned on a big stick with a light she could carry. A flashlight I think. She turned on the radio.

By the time there was some light outside mom said it had been a long time since I went out. She kept listening outside for the wind to see if it got better.

Finally she put down the puppy pads I used to to use. She set it by the front door where I used to have accidents and said “Go potty.”

Nothing.

Go potty.”

I stared at her.

It’s ok. Go potty.”

I looked at the mat, pawed at it then laid down on it.

I’m no idiot. I used to get in trouble when I peed inside the front door. She wasn’t fooling me. I passed the test. I am a good boy. I learned not to go in the house.

Still, mom seemed upset.

Finally, she said it sounded like it let up a little. She put my leash on me, opened the door and said “Let’s go.” I was all willing. I started to go out then saw and heard the rain and wind outside.

What is she crazy? I’m not going!

Then mom pulled the leash a little and showed me to go under the house out of the wind.

That I’ll do!

I ran down the steps, shot under the house peed, pooped and ran back up the stairs and into the house.

DONE!

It was still raining and the wind still blowing after breakfast. Mom had brought in a big heavy cushion from my big round chair on the screen porch. She calls it a papasan chair. It was lying in the dining room.

Arthur was out of his carrier by now and a lot more calm. We both wanted that nice big cushion and it wasn’t so dark in the dining room.

Arthur was sleeping on it. I figured mom had enough trouble the last two days so I was a good boy and shared the cushion. It was big enough for both of us.

Mom was right. It was no ordinary storm.

When it was safe enough to go outside I saw all the branches that were way up in the trees were all on the ground for me to sniff. All the new smells. All the new sights. It was so exciting I ran around the yard like a rocket leaping over branches. It was so much fun! It was all over and it smelled and looked great!

Mom had a couple of big trees to clear off our driveway so we could get out. She did not let me go with her to help. It took a couple days to clear. Mom got a couple people to help her cut an opening on the driveway. We could have car rides again!

A few days later mom was cleaning up the yard picking up all the big and small branches.

I helped.

I also tried to help by separating out the good sticks for playing but mom kept getting mad. She doesn’t understand a good play stick when she sees one. I was just trying to help keep her from wasting a perfectly good stick.

King Arthur just “supervised”, as mom calls it.

We burned the branches.

BONFIRE!

IMG_3262 sml

Those are so fun!

Mom says we are lucky. A tree did not fall on our house and the two giant trees that fell in our driveway and on our power lines were cleared enough for us to go out for car rides. Irma changed from a Hurricane to a Tropical Storm just before it hit us. She said that is better than a Hurricane. She has been in Hurricanes and they are even more noisy and scary than Tropical Storm Irma was.

Many people and animals were not as lucky as us. She said we should do what we can to help.

She said some animals cannot find their moms and dads and people are trying to help them. Others don’t have a place to stay with their families. I couldn’t stand not being with mom and dad…even Arthur. I want to help. Mom said to share information to everyone and their people.

Here are a few links to help the animals who are lost and hungry from Hurricane Irma and Harvey.

Best Friends Animal Society

American Humane’s Emergency Efforts

South Florida Wildlife Center

Here is help for their people.

For Hurricane Irma

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida

For Hurricane Harvey

Second Harvest Food Bank For Texas and Louisiana

We have friends and family in both states but mom said they are fine. They are safe and finally have power.

I hope everyone finds their family and gets food in their tummies…and everyone does what they can to help.

Work together like a pack.

It just makes sense.

For me, I am glad it is over, I was able to help clean up and I am home and dry and warm with a full tummy with mom and dad…and Arthur.

Looking Up! Solar Eclipse 2017

What a day!

We spent the whole day outside watching the sun. Well, mom and dad kept looking at the sun. They said you can’t look at the sun without special glasses. It’s too bright.

Looking Up DSC_0490 sml

AAHHH!!                                     Don’t you love that picture? I look so freaky!

So we all wore special glasses.

DSC_0503 sml

They were special alight. I couldn’t see a thing though them. Day time went dark and was night time!

Looking Up DSC_0495 sml

Who looks at the sun anyway?

Mom made it a picnic. She brought out limeade, crescent sugar cookies, treats for me and water.

DSC_0457 sml

Boy those cookies looked good.Looking Up DSC_0491 sml

It was pretty hot and boring except for when mom gave me treats now and then. It was pretty freaky at one pint. It got a little cooler and the light was pretty weird looking. The crickets came out thinking it was night time. They should’ve tried the glasses. That is night time.

Mom and dad spent most of the afternoon looking up at the sun and taking pictures. Either way it was nice being outside together. Beats sitting in the office.

Mom says it is good to keep looking up in life…

just make sure you have the right glasses.

Family

I have even more family than I thought! My Gramma and Uncle Eric came to visit. They live far away so we don’t get to see them very often. They came just to meet me!

We loved each other right away. They brought me cookies and I gave them kisses and cuddles and jumped all over them to let them know how happy I was to meet them. They loved me.

After a couple hours of running and jumping we all sat down together and cuddled on the couch. Gramma is a great petter. Uncle Eric played with me and threw my toys for me. He was my new best friend.

BONFIRE!

We had a bonfire! A bonfire is when you have a big fire (Mom says it has to be a safe fire then it is a good fire) and food. I think you have bonfires when family comes to visit. There were hot dogs, potato salad, treats for me and something mom called s’mores. She said I could not have any of that. It was so exciting and amazing! Outside at night, a big fire, food and family.

Family IMG_2295 sml

We had such a good time. I hated to see them go so soon. I don’t know where they go but I wish they could stay. I love having a bigger family. More family means more play, more cuddles and more food.

I Care About Eye Care

Last month mom and dad took me to see this really nice doctor, Dr. Brown. He is an Ophthalmologists, he takes care of eyes. He works at the Animal Eye Clinic of North Florida. Mom really likes him and she is picky.

I had to go because my white fur and pink skin around my eyes could be a problem for me out in the sun. I like being outside so I was worried I would not be able to play in the sun. Mom said Dr. Brown will tell us what we need to do so I can play in the sun.

We had to wait in the waiting room. They had a newspaper out so I could go through it. That was very nice.

Eye Care IMG_2117 sml

Mom is right. Dr. Brown is real nice.

He looked at my eyes, he pet me and played with me a little. He said I was beautiful. He was real nice!

He said I should be ok outside in the sun. It would help if I wore a visor or glasses to protect my eyes and my skin. He said it isn’t real urgent but it would help.

Mom said he’d like to see me all grown up just to see how handsome I will be.

I’d like to see him again. I love making new friends.

Well, mom got me a hat and glasses. She only puts them on me for a little bit at at time. I either shake them off or pull them with my paws. They are too big on me. Mom tried to fix the glasses, which helped. She is hoping I grow into them.

Things are going great

and they’re only getting better.

I’m doing alright,

getting good grades.

The future’s so bright…

Baby’s First Easter

I celebrated my first Easter. I was amazed at the wonderful rituals, running around the yard looking for food, baskets with new toys and more food. It was an exciting day.

Of course we couldn’t have Easter without King Arthur first unpacking the decorations. Arthur helps unpack and pack ALL holiday decorations.

IMG_1935 sml

On Easter Day I first helped Dad find his eggs. They were not real exciting since I couldn’t eat them. I tried but mom said I shouldn’t eat plastic. I liked hanging out in the yard though on such a pretty morning.

IMG_2031 sml

Then it was time for my “egg” hunt. I had what mom calls a “Dog Bone Hunt”. This was my first time but I caught on quick. Mom yelled “Dog Bone Hunt” and I shot out the front door and scrambled around the front yard sniffing out treats. Now those eggs I could eat!

IMG_2097 sml

It was so exciting I did not want it to end. Where did those treats come from? They were not there before. Why aren’t they there every day?

Then mom came out with a basket and a new toy. I did not waste time ripping the basket open. There were treats in there…and another toy! What an amazing day!

Then Arthur had his turn with a treat hunt and of course his Easter basket.

And when all the treats are gone there is always the basket.

IMG_2062 sml

It was an exciting day filled with adventures, hunts, toys and best of all, treats. The Easter Puppy was tired.
